The program focuses on contemporary issues, including new technologies, the links between art and science, and environmental and social issues.
No, the residency program is designed to accompany a project, no production is required at the end of the residency.
Registration is free. It is necessary to complete an online application for the SOLO program (6 months, artists only) or DUO (3 months, collaboration between an artist and a researcher). You will be asked to provide the following information:

  • A description of the artistic project or research that will be developed during the residency (general description, steps of the project…): 3500 characters max. (not including spaces) that can be accompanied by visuals
  • A cover letter that especially details the importance of being in France for your project (conceptual, geographical, practical, 2 pages max.
  • A portfolio of past projects: 30 pages max.
  • A detailed CV or biography: 5 pages max.

Once your application is registered, you will receive a confirmation email. Your application will be reviewed by our selection committee. Results will be reported in January 2022 for residents staying between March and August 2022 and in April 2022 for residents staying between September 2022 and February 2023.
Applications close on November 15nd, 2021 at 11:59 pm (Paris time). 
If you wish to apply for Session 2, which will begin in September 2022, you must apply now to this call. A single call for applications is launched each year for all sessions (2 sessions of 6 months for solos; 4 sessions of 3 months for duos).

The SOLO program lasts 6 months and is reserved for artists. 
It includes two sessions per year: 
- March - August 2022
- September 2022 - February 2023

The DUO program is dedicated to a collaborative project between an artist and a researcher and lasts 3 months.
It includes four sessions per year:
- March - May 2022 
- June - August 2022 
- September - November 2022 
- December 2022 - February 2023
Researchers can apply with an artist to the DUO program. 
The SOLO program is for artists only. 
No, only one application must be submitted for both members of the duo. However, the contact information of both members will be requested. The project description and the cover letter must be common; the CV must be merged into one document for both members. 
The selection committee is composed of leading figures from the world of art and research: 

  • Diana Campbell Betancourt: artistic director of the Samdani Art Foundation and curator of the Dhaka Art Summit (USA & Bangladesh)
  • Vinciane Despret: philosopher of sciences, Professor at the University of Liège and at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium)
  • Christine Macel: Chief Curator at the Centre Pompidou (France)
  • Simon Njami: curator, artistic director of the 12th and 13th edition of Dak’art (Cameroon & Switzerland)
  • Hans Ulrich Obrist: artistic director of the Serpentine Galleries (UK)
  • Philippe Vergne: director of the Serralves Foundation, in Porto (Portugal & France)

… as well as representatives of the Cité internationale des arts and the Art Explora Foundation.
The selection committee evaluates the quality of the project in coherence with the theme of the residency: contemporary issues, including new technologies, the links between art and science, and environmental and social issues. The relevance and the link of the project with Paris or France are also evaluated by the committee. It is also necessary to be able to justify a professional artistic practice of at least 5 years.

Each resident has a studio apartment of approximately 50m2 in Montmartre (shared between the two members of the duo, if applicable), a living grant of 1000€ per month (for each member of the duo, if applicable), a production grant of up to 3000€ and a personalized support for their project.  Art Explora will also cover a round trip to Paris for each resident (for each member of the duo, if applicable).
The studios are located in Paris, on the Montmartre site of the Cité internationale des arts.
The studio apartment is furnished. It is composed of a work space, a kitchen, a night space and a bathroom.
